Logan
[Former] King of Albion
Notes:
Family and childhood:
Logan is the eldest child of the Hero of Bowerstone, and has one younger sibling. He grew up hearing about his father's greatest feats. When his father defeated Lucien Fairfax and saved Albion he did so with a great sacrifice (either his own family or the many people who died building the Spire for Lucien). This undoubtedly instilled in Logan the importance of sacrifice for the greater good, and for Albion. The Hero's other greatest achievement was in uniting Albion under a peaceful monarchy, a legacy that Logan was raised to continue.
From the moment he was born, Logan was expected to rule after his parents' deaths. Which means he was trained from childhood to become a king, though the monarchy was freshly established and no monarchy had governed Albion since the Old Kingdom, many eons ago. The only example to learn from was the one the Hero of Bowerstone made as he created his kingdom which he did with strength, cunning and conviction. These were instilled in Logan as he was raised to be a future-king while his sister was more free to discover herself.
Story:
Logan inherited the throne at a relatively young age and sought to continue his parents' progress. With the guidance of Sir Walter Beck, his father's friend and advisor, he continued to fuel the industrial revolution his parents had started. He also commissioned a set of hammers called Trollblight as part of an 'entirely successful' campaign to exterminate the trolls in Albion which had terrorised travellers through the country.
It is here that things take a turn for the worse. Four years before the start of Fable 3, Logan set out on an expedition to the continent of Aurora and ended up passing through Shadelight. Here, he came in contact with the Crawler and its minions. In the ensuing battle, all of his men were slain, and he barely made it out alive. Kalin, leader of Aurora, found and helped Logan. From Kalin he learned that the Crawler had destroyed most of civilization on Aurora. In return for their kindness, Logan promised the Aurorans that he would protect them from the Darkness.
However, upon his return home, the blind seer Theresa, his father's guide, appeared and told him that the Darkness would come for Albion in five years time, destroying everything. Logan told those close to him, but his fears were attributed to trauma from his failed expedition. With no support from the people meant to advise and support him, the horror he'd witnessed in Aurora, and the warning from Theresa, Logan devoted himself to defending Albion from the impending threat. He increased the tax, effectively shut down schooling and education, and forced the people to work long hours in the factories. In doing so he was increasingly hated, but having learned that explanations for his desperation would be dismissed, he doubled down, becoming more isolated as he got rid of those who might try to interrupt his plans.
Despite all his efforts, it still wasn't enough, leading Logan to turn the running of the country's industry and economy over to Reaver, who effectively cut wages by one hundred percent and introduced both slavery and child labour. He also set about replacing the Royal Army with his fanatical Elite Soldiers, sending those who protest to posts where they are likely to die. At this point his growing paranoia that those previously loyal would try to stop him was no longer paranoia, and with the fate of all of Albion in the balance, Logan was steadfastly ruthless.
After a factory worker is executed, a mob of angry citizens protested outside of Bowerstone Castle. In response, Logan ordered the mob to be killed. Sir Walter, Logan's sister and her childhood friend confronted him to try and stop this. This was a deeply painful betrayal to Logan who had tried to protect his sister from everything, even assigning Sir Walter to watch over her. In the Throne Room, Logan, feeling betrayed by his own blood, made his sister choose between the lives of their friend or the lives of the riot leaders. Logan abides by either choice, but warned that if his sister chooses neither, Logan will execute both the friend and the riot leaders. This isn't unlike the choices Logan had been forced to make: The death of what he loved (Albion and his family) or the death of those opposing him, with the destruction of everything should he fail to do anything. Whatever the decision made, his sister, having witnessed Logan's tyranny first-hand, left the castle with Walter to lead a revolution for the crown.
When the Hero of Brightwall and Walter storm the War Room at the end of the revolutionary war, Logan surrenders without a fight, commenting that his sister has "finally become the woman I always wanted you to be" and admitting that "perhaps the time has come for someone else to lead Albion". Logan's trial follows soon after, where he explained why he acted as he did and passed on Theresa's warning to his sister, the new ruler. In the end, his sister spared him and he fought in the final battle against the Crawler's invasion. Afterwards he attends Sir Walter's memorial, to pay his respects to the advisor, but also to say his goodbyes to his sister. Impressed that the kingdom still stood, and knowing that Albion was in safe hands, Logan subsequently left Albion to parts unknown to make amends for his transgressions.
Personality:
Introverted - Logan is most comfortable alone or in smaller groups. It's clear he's most calm when it's (pretty much) just him and his sibling. Although naturally subdued and thoughtful, this is emphasised by how thoroughly exhausted he is by the time Fable 3 happens. This introversion and isolation was compounded by a number of factors, but was especially accelerated by the lack of support upon his return from Albion and desperation in protecting his country causing him to get rid of those who might stop him.
Caring - Despite everything, Logan does care for his sister. Though keeping her out of the war room, decision making, and away from current events could be seen purely as him viewing her as a child, it's not just that. He assigns Sir Walter to protect and train her, immediately sheaths his sword rather than fight her, and his voice softens whenever he speaks to her. At the beginning of Fable 3 he views her very much as a child, but one he intends to protect from the harsh realities around them. By the end, it's clear he respects the woman she's become and easily steps aside, trusting she'll be a good ruler, even without him around for counsel. Being the introverted heir apparent, it's unlikely Logan spent a huge amount of time bonding with his sister as a child, but it's clear he cares for her. Their first and (potentially) last encounters in the game mirror each other: Both times, even when it's his own life on the line, Logan attempts to teach his sister about the weighty decisions a ruler must make. In the end, it's her that he steps down for, her that he listens to, and though he resisted all other rebellions he calmly accepted whatever judgement his sister passed down on him.
Driven - As a ruler, Logan is exceptionally driven. His reserved personality, lack of friends and support, and even the active defiance shown against him didn't stop Logan from pursuing his goals. Before the Crawler he managed to continue driving the industrial revolution his parents had begun, clear Albion of the deadly trolls, and even spearheaded an expedition to Aurora - a place that even after his return was thought to be little more than a myth. Unfortunately this drive, combined with an intense fear of what was to come, made his leadership exceptionally deadly. It turned drive into ruthlessness.
Dignified - Not once does Logan raise his voice or lose his composure. Even when frustrated or angry his exclamations are restrained. Whether he's facing the betrayal of his dear sister, or his imminent death, Logan remains calm and noble whatever he's dealing with.
Diplomatic - In his early years as king he seemed to make a very good impression with the people he spoke to. He spoke with leaders and notable people across Albion and beyond, making promises that were believed and that he surely intended to keep. He has the ability to be highly diplomatic, but that became impossible in his feverish attempts to protect Albion.
Distrustful - Being born into the limelight that followed his parents, Logan has undoubtedly encountered many sycophants, liars and schemers. Eternally trying to discern who is a true ally and friend, and who is close for opportunity is a tiring and lonely existence. It might only have been an exhausting but inevitable fact of life if it hadn't compounded the trauma from Aurora, where those close associates he had previously trusted did not believe him when he recounted his experiences. The small resistances to his rule lent further proof that no one was to be trusted or relied upon except himself, escalating to the maddened tyranny seen in the event of Fable 3. Trying to get past his protective mistrust would be a difficult task indeed.
Fearful - There's no doubt that Logan suffered from PTSD, and likely developed nyctophobia, after his encounter with the Crawler. It's clear from how gaunt, pale and dark eyed he is that he's not functioning all that well. Logan was raised to be his father's son, to take the mantle of king and live up to a Hero's potential, a task that he had previously succeeded at. In Shadelight he enters the cave with a number of men and encounters the darkness. The Crawler is a creature that thrives off of psychological and emotional harm as well as physical, and would have used each and every one of the soldiers' deaths to maximum effect, taunting Logan even as he tried to command and be the leader he had, up until then, been very successful as. There's also the note that Logan came out of Shadelight with numerous scars. Most notable are the many scars around his mouth. This is an exceptionally odd place to get scars, until you consider that the Crawler was able to possess people by entering through their mouth. It was eager to possess people that would give it an advantage, as seen with Sir Walter Beck. Who better than the very king of Albion? Which means that not only did Logan watch all of his men die while being physically attacked and psychologically tormented by his failure in action, but he also fended off possession by the Crawler. In Sir Walter, players can watch as over a single year, the previously brash, brave, jovial, hardened warrior becomes anxious, fearful, and paranoid, all while having the support and belief of his friends. Logan had no support once he returned home, only dismissal, which had the potential to give others an excuse to take power from him - the very power that was needed to save his home.
Appearance:
Logan is much slimmer and taller than his sibling, even if the player maximises their stats to try and match. He is incredibly gaunt and pale, with dark rings around his eyes, pronounced cheekbones due to hollow cheeks, and an overall angular set of features. His hair is dark, and combed back, kept neat and away from his face. As mentioned, his mouth has several scars across it, as well as a goatee.
Throughout Fable 3 he is only ever seen in one outfit: A ceremonial cuirass and gauntlets with brass motifs, black gloves, boots and cape, and purple clothing, all with a gold trim. He never wears his crown during daily proceedings. He's only ever depicted with a crown in the cinematic trailer and in paintings/posters throughout Albion.
Hero Status:
In the Fable series, Heroes are mystical warriors. They are extraordinary humans with power over the three heroic disciplines of Strength, Skill, and Will. Logan's father was one of the rare Heroes who possessed mastery over all three disciplines.
Throughout the series it's clearly established that Heroes pass on their power through the bloodline, and there is never any indication of it having skipped a child. Even when the child isn't trained to be a Hero (Theresa), they still have extraordinary powers. However, it's suggested that the powers of Heroes are potentially weaker by the events of Fable 3, with the main character needing gauntlets to utilise their magic and needing to 'unlock' their power with the help of a Guild Seal.
Logan never had the chance to use the Guild Seal, or the magical gauntlets that allowed a Hero to use spells. The fact that he survived the Crawler in Shadelight and in Bowerstone, and held up against the mental torture of the Crawler without becoming incapacitated, suggests he did indeed have Hero potential. Potential that, unfortunately, went untapped.
[Former] King of Albion
Notes:
- I'm flexible with playing Logan from different points of his timeline, from before his tyranny all the way through to post-Crawler Invasion. So I'll write this as if he's at the latest stage of his plotline for convenience.
- By default I play his younger sibling as his sister, and their father as being the Hero of the parents - though I'm happy to change this for RP purposes.
- Trigger Warning: Logan has PTSD/trauma, and his tyranny led to slave labour, child labour, and poverty.
